Sunshine Girls hunt CAC gold vs T&T
SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador — Adean Thomas, Jamaica’s senior team netball captain for the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games, is relishing the opportunity to lead the Sunshine Girls to a gold-medal finish.
The Sunshine Girls, who are favourites to win gold, are set to take on Caribbean rivals Trinidad and Tobago in this evening’s title deciding game.
Match time is 7:30 pm (8:30 pm Jamaica time).
The Jamaican team, which includes five players who are to attend this month’s Netball World Cup (NWC) tournament in South Africa, have been very dominant in the championships, winning their matches by wide margins.
They established a new record for the most goals in a game when they hammered minnows Cayman Islands 118-10 on Tuesday. The previous record of 108 goals was set by Trinidad and Tobago the previous day.
The 28-year-old Thomas, who is the most senior member of the team in El Salvador with more that 50 appearances, said she was a bit surprised she was selected to lead the Sunshine Girls team. But she said she has been receiving the full support of the players.
“I never saw this opportunity coming, that I will be the captain for the CAC Games team, but it is something that I took up and I am enjoying it.
“I don’t think there is a lot of pressure on me as the captain to lead this team to the gold medal because since I have been here and I started playing with the girls, it has been a bit easy for me as everybody is playing their roles,” she said.
“The shooters, the mid-court players and defenders have been doing their job and once it continues to be like that, we will just continue to give of our best in this tournament,” Thomas added.
The Sunshine Girls, ranked fourth in the world, seven places above the Trinidadians in the standings.
Thomas said winning the gold medal will mean a lot to the girls as well as national programme as they chase their first-ever gold medal at a major senior championships for Jamaica.
“I think for us winning the gold medal, I think it will be major thing not only for us, but for Jamaica as well because as you know it is first netball is being played in the CAC Games and so we definitely want to take home back this gold medal to Jamaica.
“This will be the first gold medal for the Sunshine Girls in an international championship, and so come Friday, we will be going all out for it because the girls are very confident and I am backing us 110 per cent,” Thomas said.
