Portland woman found guilty of fatally stabbing German woman in love triangle spat
PORTLAND, Jamaica— A Portland woman has been found guilty of murder for the 2014 death of a German woman, who was killed for her involvement in an apparent love triangle.
The deceased is Ute Soetebier, who had been living in Jamaica for several years.
The accused has been identified as Sherine Campbell.
It is reported that at the time of the incident, Campbell and her co-accused, Tyrone Nugent had been in an intimate relationship since November 2011.
Nugent then reportedly started a relationship with Soetebier, where he lived with her as his common-law wife, but continued an intimate relationship with the accused.
According to reports, on occasions in 2011 and 2012, Campbell would spend the night at the deceased’s Park Mount, Portland home at Nugent’s invitation, when Soetebier was away.
On the night of January 14, 2014, Campbell— who was 31-years-old at the time— proceeded to the home of 49-year-old Soetebier armed with a knife.
It is alleged that Soetebier, who had three dogs, told the accused to leave her home, as the last time she was there, trouble ensued.
Campbell then reportedly attacked Soetebier inflicting over 40 stab wounds to the neck and face. During the incident, she received a dog bite on her right calf, which was later observed by the police and a doctor.
Following the incident, Campbell reportedly took a taxi to St Margaret’s Bay in the parish where she spent the night at the home of a male friend. There, she allegedly attempted to wash out what appeared to be blood from her pink blouse.
Later that night, Nugent, who was 29-years-old at the time, went home and found the deceased covered in blood outside the house. He immediately made a report to the neighbours and the police and assisted the lawmen to find Campbell.
The accused was apprehended by the police at the friend’s home and she handed over the clothes she had been wearing during the attack. After examination, blood matching that of the deceased German woman was found on the blouse.
The postmortem report revealed that Soetebier died from multiple stab wounds to the neck.
Campbell admitted to the police that she was at the scene of the murder and that Soetebier had asked her to leave. She also admitted to owning the knife that was used to kill the woman. However, she claimed during trial that it was Nugent who had murdered Soetebier.
During the 12-day trial, 17 witnesses were called. At the end, a seven-member jury found Campbell guilty of murder. Her sentencing is set for Friday, October 27, 2023.
Nugent, who was charged with misprision of felony, had been discharged after a successful application of no case to answer and a formal verdict of not guilty.
