‘Cut-throat king’ Barnes walks away with Supreme Domino Masters title
AFTER four rounds of exhilarating and entertaining dominoes, with over 400 players pushing their smarts and game acumen to the limits, Wilfred Barnes made history by becoming the first-ever national champion of the inaugural Supreme Domino Masters series.
The competition, which is played in a cut-throat format, had its grand conclusion on Sunday, July 2, 2023, at the Chinese Benevolent Association (CBA) on Old Hope Road in St Andrew.
Barnes, Tennay Burton, Romane Savage, and Stefan Cooper all advanced to the grand final after winning their semi-final games.
Barnes came from behind to win the match, outscoring Burton (5 points), Savage (4 points), and Cooper (3 points) in the first six points.
Barnes was awarded with prize money of $1 million as the national champion, while Burton went home with $500,000, Savage got $250,000, and Cooper received $100,000.
“It means a lot to me that, despite my late registration, I was able to be successful in the event. Being crowned domino champion and a Jamaican fills me with joy and pride. Thank you to all of my domino fans, especially those who have kept me motivated all day,” Barnes said. “Without you my victory would not have been possible. The motivation helped me get through the difficult times.
“Also, compliments to the opponents for providing a difficult situation in which I had to focus and ensure that every shot was penciled out and placed accurately,” he added.
Supreme Ventures Limited (SVL) Senior Vice-President of Retail and Customer Operations Dwayne Tulloch expressed his excitement and emphasised the company’s commitment to empowering individuals and giving back.
“We launched the Supreme Domino Masters series earlier this year with a vision to connect with Jamaicans in their communities and give back to them through one their favourite entertainment pastimes — and I think we’ve certainly achieved that. It brings us great joy to witness the crowning of Wilfred Barnes as the champion and awarding him the grand prize.
“Overall, we’re very proud to witness the growth of the tournament and the sense of camaraderie that has developed among the players over the past few months. The staging of these finals for the Supreme Domino Masters series is a significant milestone for us at Supreme Ventures. This is the inaugural staging, and through the support of the domino players, the sponsors, and the enthusiastic and devoted spectators, the tournament has been a resounding success,” Tulloch said.
