Two arrested in death of St Ann shopkeeper
ST ANN, Jamaica – Two suspects have been taken into police custody in relation to the killing of a man in Watt Town, St Ann on Sunday morning.
Dead is 60-year-old Herbert Simms otherwise called ‘Babsy’, a shop owner in the community.
Reports are that a resident went to Simms’ establishment to make a purchase, when his body was discovered.
The police were alerted and upon their arrival, Simms was seen lying in a pool of blood with stab wounds to his neck.
His shop was ransacked.
In an update this afternoon, head of the St Ann police, Senior Superintendent Dwight Powell said the suspects were held shortly after the incident.
He said they are expected to be charged today.
“The investigation quickly ensued and we managed to pick up two of the prime suspects in this matter before the day is out we are certain that they will be formally charged for the offence of murder,” SSP Powell said, adding that the incident has once again highlighted the domestic violence issue in the parish.
“This has brought again into question the issue of us not resolving domestic -related matters and so again I’m going to use the opportunity to appeal to the citizens of this parish to find peaceable ways in resolving their conflict situation,” he noted.
He reminded residents that there are centres in the parish to aid in solving domestic violence issues.
“Of course the police we are there to assist and so we have the centre that is available in Alexandria that is the domestic dispute resolution centre, there is also other places in St Ann’s Bay where we partner with our persons and so we are saying let us talk it out instead of fighting out the issues,” he said.
