Sunshine Girls upbeat ahead of Barbados showdown
SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador — Jamaica Sunshine Girls co-Coach Phyllis Thompson says no stone will be left unturned when they take on fellow Caribbean side Barbados in their first-ever match at the Central America and Caribbean (CAC) Games tomorrow.
Thompson told the Jamaica Observer that the Sunshine Girls team, which include three players who will be attending Netball World Cup (NWC) this month, is ready to deliver the first-ever gold medal for the country in netball competition.
“We are not taking them lightly because Barbados have a very good team and so we are just going to go out there and play hard because they have been preparing for this tournament and they are upbeat and ready to go,” said Thompson.
“We definitely want this gold medal because netball is being contested at the CAC Games for the first time and so we want to make history by winning the gold medal for the country.
“The girls are excited because they have put in the work and I know that they will represent themselves and the country well at the championships,” she added.
Adean Thomas, Rebekah Robinson and Crystal Plummer are the three players on the team that will be heading to the NWC tournament later this month.
Thompson shared that this tournament is very crucial for these players because it will help to prepare them for the NWC which will be held in Cape Town, South Africa, from July 28 to August 6.
“This tournament is very important for these three players because what it means is that they will go into the Netball World Cup with some good game practice and they will also be very sharp and ready for the tournament in South Africa,” the coach noted.
Thompson added: “These three girls, like the rest of the team, are very determined and focused and so I know that they will go out there and perform to the best of their abilities for Jamaica.”
Thompson and co-Coach Nicole Aiken-Pinnock are having their first stints as national senior team coaches, and the former, in particular, has embraced the opportunity and the challenge with both hands.
“I am very elated to be here and I am just going out there to guide the ladies in performing their best so at the end of the day we can get the gold medal,” she said.
“I have been coaching for a while because I have coached the UWI Pelicans in championships, but this is bigger than the Intercol level.
“I am confident, and I am motivated that Nicole and I will just put our heads together based on what we look at from the training sessions started and I know that we will come up with the goods,” she ended.
