U-22 Boyz coach encouraged despite Honduras draw
SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador — Head coach of Jamaica’s Under-22 footballers, Marcel “Fuzzy” Gayle says lack of concentration was the key factor contributing to the team conceding a late goal in the 1-1 draw against Honduras in their opening match of the Central America and Caribbean (CAC) Games.
Ronaldo Webster scored the opening goal for the junior Reggae Boyz in the 42nd minute on Wednesday. However, the Hondurans equalised in the fourth minute of second-half stoppage time courtesy of a brilliant free kick from striker Axel Maldonado.
Gayle said they should have secured all three points because they outplayed their opponents for almost the entire game.
“This is nothing to be ashamed about because this is our first game as a unit together and I think that we went out there, and we stuck to the task, and we pressed them up to the 90th minute,” said Gayle.
“Unfortunately, when we were a goal up the Hondurans threw players up at us. And I think we lost concentration when we conceded the set piece and they scored against us, because we switched off. However, this is something that we can fix and build on going forward in this competition,” Gayle said.
“We really wanted three points from this game and so we were disappointed about that but, nevertheless, this is something that we can build on for the remainder of the tournament. These boys are confident and so they will come out much stronger in our next game against Costa Rica,” he said.
Jamaicans dominated the first half of the game and were rewarded when Webster, who plies his trade for Cavalier in the Jamaica Premier League, fired home a powerful, left-footed shot which went like a rocket past the Honduras goalkeeper Edwin Marin.
However, the Hondurans found their rhythm in the second stanza as they outplayed the Jamaicans. They were rewarded when Maldonado netted past Jamaican custodian Asher Hutchinson.
The young Reggae Boyz are set to take on Costa Rica in their second match of the tournament on Friday.
