Bad luck worse than obeah
Dear Editor,
There is a local saying, “Bad luck worse than obeah.” It seems Prime Minister Andrew “Brogad” Holness is discovering this in spades.
First, a People’s National Party (PNP)-commissioned poll done earlier showed that the Opposition party had inched ahead of his ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP). Indeed, that same poll indicated that Prime Minister Holness would no longer enjoy a sizeable seat advantage in Parliament if a general election were to be called — the projection is that he would lose 13 of the 48 seats his party now has.
This poll was done before the hefty pay hike given to parliamentarians which resulted in stinging criticism from various sectors of the society; the residual aftermath of which has not totally gone away.
As if that one-two punch combination was not enough, his Administration has come up with one of the greatest gaffs of the century — that of declaring a National Day of Mourning for slain children on the same day the Primary Exit Profile results were released.
There is another apt saying, “If it were not for bad luck, I would have no luck at all.”
