Multipotentialite Fabian Morris urges youth to pursue their passions
FABIAN Morris, commonly known as Fyahman, is testament to the great things that can happen when you decide to try something new. Morris, a 21-year-old final-year law student and popular disc jockey, is now the newly appointed Guinness Sounds of Greatness (GSOG) Nex Gen Ambassador for 2023.
Hailing from a small community in Portmore, Morris always knew that he was destined for greatness — however, he did not fathom that music would be a major part of his journey.
“When I began this journey I was an event host and, despite loving music, I did not view myself as a DJ or an MC. I started thinking about it after a few conversations with other prominent young DJs and I decided it was worth a try,” shared the talented young DJ.
While pursuing his undergraduate degree in law Morris faced multiple challenges, but it was in those moments he learned more about himself and where his passions lie.
“I had to abandon my home in Spanish Town because gunmen attacked it, and I ended up living at The University of the West Indies (The UWI). There were multiple times where I wanted to give up on pursuing law but I told myself that if I did that, I would be like everyone else. There were multiple times when I thought about whether this was something I wanted to do as a career path. I consider myself to be an independent person; I always try to do things on my own and I wanted to ensure I was pushing myself to be different,” Morris recounted.
He soon came to realise that his passion for learning while trying new things allowed him the opportunity to become involved in a range of extra-curricular activities at The UWI. Accepting himself as a multipotentialite, the dynamic young DJ shared that his career goals therefore change often, as he does not believe that anyone should place themselves in a box.
“I feel like in order for us to survive as young persons in Jamaica we have to be able to do multiple things. I am able to teach; I was a part- time teacher at a few prominent high schools in Jamaica and I also did hosting gigs to make ends meet while I was living on campus. I do still want to pursue law, but I would also like to become a principal one day while still building my career in entertainment.”
With multiple accolades under his belt, Morris is elated to be named Guinness Sounds of Greatness Nex Gen Ambassador.
“The competition has been around for years. I would never imagine that my career would have reached a point where I would be representing such a large brand.
“I am looking forward to it, especially because it is centred around uplifting the next generation. Guinness has done an excellent job of supporting dancehall culture. It is important that we look out for my generation and others after us to ensure that we are maintaining the standard set by those before us. It’s never just about playing music [as] you never know when you will be called on to represent Jamaica on a global scale — and we have to ensure we represent at the highest level,” shared Morris.
Morris has been tasked with aiding and guiding the eight DJs who will go head-to-head to advance to the finale in the quest for the coveted title of the GSOG Nex Gen Champion for 2023. In addition to this, he will be a part of all GSOG events in varying capacities, including being a host and DJ.
To anyone who has multiple passions, Morris encourages them to work for what they desire.
“First of all, it does not matter how talented you are, if you are inconsistent and you are opposed to constructive criticism, then you will not reap the success you crave; you must first be disciplined and teachable. You also have to put energy into anything you want for it to be what you envision for yourself. You cannot be like everybody else. You do not need to do what your family and friends are recommending. It is okay to do something different, even if it means doing multiple things.”
