From Grant’s Pen to… Boom Boom
Marlon “Boom Boom” Wizard has arguably become one of the most-sought-after sound system operators/selectors within the dancehall industry.
He says majority of his success is simply karma for the good he has done to others.
“A how yuh deal wid people enuh. Me is a people person, enuh. Yuh see if mi did all fi miself, mi wouldn’t have no name; mi wouldn’t have no career suh long,” he told the Jamaica Observer during an exclusive sitdown.
“Mi always look out fi di youths dem [and] help di youths dem. Once mi see yuh have potential as a youth, mi aguh reach out to yuh. And, yuh see di youth dem weh mi reach out to? Dem listen. Yuh see di one dem weh nuh listen, ah dem put demself inna some position right now weh dem deh. Mi always reach out to di youths dem suh di youths dem have a love fi mi. Differently, how mi deal wid di people dem inna di streets…dat ah di main reason mi stay on top from dem time deh till now. Mi kind to dem; mi tek care ah dem like mi son and mi daughter,” Boom Boom explained.
The Grant’s Pen resident began his career on the Invaders sound system in that St Andrew community.
Adding that, apart from Jamaica, he is well received in England, Boom Boom said he never plans his sets ahead, because he has to get a feel of each crowd upon arrival.
He also said he is not a fan of appearing on long line-ups with multiple artistes.
“Mi haffi guh and freestyle enuh. Remember dis enuh — especially ah foreign — ah mi ah di headliner of di show enuh. Mi nuh do show wid artiste. Mi don’t like it and di main reason why mi nuh do show wid artiste is because mi nuh want di artiste dem feel like ah dem pull di crowd. Mi like do my show fi bring out my fans dem, because me is an entertainer…if di promoter have 200 people ah come support him, when him book me, him ah get a next 300. So, automatically mi sell,” the selector added.
Outside of music, Boom Boom enjoys playing football and watching television.
He gave some insight into how he manages his demanding schedule.
“Ah two big show mi have inna Jamaica right now fi do summer ’cause normally mi deh overseas, but wid dem two big show yah mi haffi represent: Dancehall Night at Sumfest and Dream Weekend Igloo. Different from dat mi deh overseas. Mi have a Europe tour a come up end of August den mi fly back in pon Sundays fi Boom Sundays, Uptown Mondays, and Boasy Tuesdays, and pon ah Wednesday mi gah Weddy and leggo di streets and fly back out pon a Thursday,” Boom Boom said.
