Barnes, Smikle win at New York City Grand Prix
Up-and-coming quarter-miler Zandrion Barnes and discus thrower Traves Smikle were the Jamaican winners at Saturday’s United States of American Track and Field Federation (USATF) New York City Grand Prix — a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold event that was held at Ichan Stadium in Manhattan.
Barnes, who was competing in an individual event overseas for the first time, won the men’s 400m in 45.05 seconds, while Smikle took the men’s discus throw with 65.36m, led a number of Jamaicans who had impressive performances.
One of the highlight of the day was the world leading and Great Britain national record 9.83 seconds (1.3m/s) set by Kingston-based Zharnel Hughes to win the men’s 100m beating Jamaica’s Ackeem Blake into second place.
There were also second place finishes for shot putter Danniel Thomas-Dodd, Brianna Williams and Kimberly Williamson.
Barnes, who ran his life time best 44.90 seconds earlier this month, won on his international debut as another Jamaican, Karayme Bartley, was fourth in 46.60 seconds.
Americans Matthew Boling was second in 45.58 seconds and Trevor Stewart third in 45.85 seconds.
Smikle led from the start in the discus throw and saw training partner Kai Chang take third with 63.17 seconds with Alex Rose of Samoa placing second in 64.63m.
Thomas-Dodd, who has had her most consistent season in a while, had just three legal attempts but her 19.38m was good enough for second behind American Maggie Ewen’s 19.68m with another American, Chase Ealey, third with 19.25m.
On the track, Blake got off to a fast start with American Christian Coleman, but Hughes produced a devastating second half as he cruised past the leaders to win and broke Linford Christie’s record 9.87 seconds set in 1993 and also lowed his own personal best from 9.91 seconds.
Blake was second in 9.93 seconds and Coleman third in 10.03 seconds while another Jamaican Kadrian Goldson was sixth in 10.22 seconds.
Williams equalled her season’s best 11.04 seconds (1.2m/s) in the women’s 100m as Aleia Hobbs won in 10.98 seconds and Melissa Jefferson third in a season’s best 10.06 seconds, while Ashanti Moore was sixth in 11.14 seconds.
Williamson cleared 1.83m in the women’s high jump as American Vashti Cunningham won with 1.95m.
Former World Champion Danielle Williams was third in the 100m hurdles in a wind-aided 12.33 seconds (2.8m/s), behind Americans Kendra Harrison- 12.29 seconds and Alaysha Johnson- 12.30 seconds.
Charokee Young ran 51.02 seconds for third in the women’s 400m while Ashley Williams was seventh in 52.39 seconds and Junelle Bromfield eighth in 52.97 seconds.
American 400m hurdles world record holder Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone won with a personal best 49.51 seconds while Gabby Thomas placed second in 50.29 seconds.
Orlando Bennett was seventh in the 110m hurdles in a season’s best 13.34 seconds (1.6m/s) just ahead of Damion Thomas’ 13.53 seconds, while American Daniel Roberts won in a season’s best 13.01 seconds, beating Devon Allen who also had a season’s best of 13.04 seconds while Jamal Britt was third in 13.19 seconds.
Erica Belvit was sixth in the women’s hammer throw event with a best mark of 68.40m.
