Jamaican boxers ready to rumble in El Salvador
Jamaican boxers Jaden Eccleston and Sanji Williams will bow into action today at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in El Salvador.
Ecceleston, who is a light heavyweight fighter, will take on home boy Jairo Luna starting at 2:00 pm (3:00 pm Jamaica time). A pulsating encounter is on the card as the southpaw fighters test each other.
In the second match, which is scheduled to start right after the Eccelston and Luna fight, Williams, a featherweight boxer, will challenge Puerto Rico’s Calab Tirado.
Felipe Sanchez, who is one of the coaches of the Jamaican team along with Gilbert Vaz, said the country’s boxers have done a lot of work in their preparation for the championships and they are now ready and raring to go.
“I am feeling very confident with both of these fighters because since we have arrived, we have gotten up as usual early to train, doing our running and other drills, so our fighters are looking forward to both matches on Thursday,” said Sanchez.
“I think that Jaden’s match against Luna is going to draw a lot of attention, but we have prepared for this fight, and we are just going to put our game plans together as to how we are going to approach the match game,” he added.
Lightweight Daniel Hylton and middleweight Tevoy Barrett are the other Jamaican fighters who are down to compete at the championships.
Sanchez explained that it is important that both fighters win their respective matches today because it will set the tone for the remaining matches to come for the country’s other two fighters.
“I think these two guys have to set the bar for us because this will show our other competitors that we are here and we are here to win medals for Jamaica and I know that our guys are very determined to achieve that,” he said.
“I think for Sanji who are fighting against Tirado, I think that Puerto Rico has one of the strongest teams along with Cuba, Colombia and Dominican Republic. However, I am confident that Sanji is going to chop him down and show that Jamaica is a force to reckon with at this championships,” Sanchez added.
He also shared that the team’s preparation going into the championships has been intense, and all four boxers are in tip-top shape and raring to go.
“Our preparations have been amazing because we have been fortunate to have our camps at the JDF (Jamaica Defence Force) and so we have been preparing for about a month now in an intense camp with training twice a day,” he said.
