BOJ investigating claims of damage to new notes
THE Bank of Jamaica (BOJ) said it will conduct an investigation into a video purporting to show damage to the new polymer banknote.
The video, which has been circulated on social media, shows a woman claiming features of the notes were missing after it had been in her possession for a few days. The central bank said it has initiated contact with the social media user from whose platform the video was circulated. It said it has however been unsuccessful so far in its efforts to retrieve the banknote in question.
Still the central bank said it remains committed to investigating any genuine concerns or issues surrounding the notes. It said members of the public who have questions or concerns about the banknotes should contact its customer service number at (876) 922-0750.
The BOJ also pointed to another video in circulation depicting liquid being poured on two banknotes. The bank said while it understands the curiosity and interest surrounding the new notes, and while the notes withstood the liquid test, it is nevertheless urging members of the public to desist from intentionally subjecting them to unnecessary tests.
BOJ is also urging the public to be responsible in consuming and sharing content as social media platforms are susceptible to the spread of misleading, inaccurate or unverified information.
It said it takes the integrity and security of the nation’s currency seriously and reiterates the importance of maintaining public trust in Jamaica’s new series of banknotes. The bank has invested in cutting-edge technologies and conducted extensive research to ensure the durability and security of the polymer banknotes before being released into circulation.
The BOJ also reiterates its confidence in the durability of the new series of polymer banknotes and notes that the substrate and enhanced security features have been subject to rigorous testing of the highest global standards.
It said once a genuine note is damaged or otherwise compromised, it can be exchanged at BOJ only.
