Wake up, America!
Dear Editor,
If there ever was a time America needed to rise from its slumber, it’s now.
Former President Donald Trump has made this so obvious Stevie Wonder can see it.
It is time for serious amendments to be made to the constitution of the United States. When drafted by the founding fathers over 200 years ago, no thought was given to how to treat with a current or former president running afoul of the law.
Indeed, 50 years ago, the person who tested the constitution was President Richard Nixon, but he had the decency to resign in the aftermath of the Watergate scandal.
Now we have an ex-president who has been indicted on federal charges vowing to remain in the race for presidency even if convicted.
The alarming thing is that, as written, the constitution gives him that right. Even more shocking is that he could run the country as president not from the White House but from a prison cell.
This can’t be the example the most powerful democracy in the world wants to present to those Trump likes to refer to as banana republics.
It seems to have been born in the United States and be over 35 are the only criteria needed to be president. But that was before Trump descended on the White House in January 2017, thereafter the constitution was damned.
