EYES ON THE PRIZE
HEAD Coach Heimir Hallgrímsson is expected to make “five to six” changes to the Reggae Boyz’ starting 11 for an international friendly football match against Jordan on Monday.
The game, being played at Wiener Neustadt Ergo Arena, kicks off at 7 am (Jamaica time) as their pre-Concacaf Gold Cup camp in Austria wraps up.
While expressing confidence they can beat the 84th-ranked Jordan team, Hallgrímsson, Assistant Coach Merron Gordon, and Captain Andre Blake, who is expected to start, says winning the warm up game is not the main goal as the aim is to instead use the games to prepare for the Gold Cup.
Jamaica will face the USA in their opening game of the Gold Cup on Saturday and Hallgrímsson, who is yet to lead the team to a victory in six games, with three draws and three losses, says “we need to start winning”.
The trio faced local and overseas journalists in an online press conference on Sunday.
Blake, who was not involved in Thursday’s 2-1 loss to Qatar, said in friendly games, “It’s not always about winning. The coaches can use the games to make tweaks and also [for] seeing where they can play certain players.”
Hallgrímsson says “no player will play two 90 minutes in the camp; we don’t want to overload them”, after sharing earlier that he was happy they had come through one game and several training sessions without any injuries.
He also said Monday’s game, in addition to the many changes, would see different tactics being employed from those used against Qatar. This, he says, will have more to do with the Reggae Boyz’ preparation for the Gold Cup rather than Jordan.
“We want to be able to change tactics, and we are using the friendlies to learn how to adjust during games,” Hallgrímsson said.
When asked about a playing style Hallgrímsson said they are getting to the point where they have the players they want.
“We are getting there slowly,” he said. “We are finding the players we want, who are suited for what we want.”
Monday’s game will be the first against Jordan and the 12th Asian opponent for Jamaica.
