Howard Cooke leading Western Primary champs
ST JAMES, Jamaica – Former champions Howard Cooke Primary were the early leaders after the first day of the Western Primary Championships which started at Cornwall College on Friday and will end on Saturday afternoon.
Howard Cooke Primary had tallied 50.50 points after six finals, 16.5 better than second placed Esher Primary-37, followed by Barracks Road Primary-32, Falmouth All-Age- 26 and Green Pond Primary in fifth with 24.5 points.
Two meet records were broken in the first round on Friday, including Danielle Robinson of Hague Primary, who led the qualifying for the Girls’ Class 6 400m, running 1:04.86 seconds, breaking the 1:05.10 seconds set by Shasha Kaye Tracey of Sandy Bay Primary in 2009.
Esher Primary’s Jevono Robinson ran 22.52 seconds to lead the qualifiers in the Boys’ Class 7 (9-10) 200m, smashing the record 26.96 seconds set in 2014 by Lansford Cunningham of Wakefield Primary.
Robinson’s teammate Marco Thorpe, who was second in the first round, was also under the old record with 24.32 seconds.
Zhi Hew Whitter of Hemmingay Prep won the Class 5 boys long jump with 4.97m, coming from behind to beat early leader Kadir Lewis of Howard Cooke Primary-4.60m with Esher Primary’s Sandre Bernard third with 4.20m.
Howard Cooke’s Devonte Blackwood won the Class 6 boys long jump with a best 4.20m, Esher Primary’s Ashwayne Getten was second with 4.10m and Howard Cooke’s Akeem McDonald third with 4.00m.
Catherine Hall’s Jimar Lewis won the Boys’ 800m Open, running 2:40.59 seconds, beating the Falmouth Primary pair of Obryan Gordon-2:44.55 seconds and Kijani Edwards-2:45.24 seconds.
Falmouth’s Cameron Dilworth won the girls 800m Open with 2:50.11 seconds, beating Esher Primary’s Nikara Sinclair- 3:02.97 seconds and Duncans All-Age’s Mikhalia Walters- 3:06.34 seconds.
Lisoun Brown of Howard Cooke Primary took the Class 5 girls long jump with 4.10m, beating Green Pond’s Arziki Clarke- 4.09m and Kelesia Williams of Howard Cooke Primary-3.71m.
Barracks Road were first and second in the Class 6 girls long jump with Lashane Gillette winning with 3.90m with her teammate Shaneka Henry second with 3.85m and Esher Primary’s Abriel Rose third with 3.70m.
