Corinaldi Avenue win U-13 tourney to end 30-year drought
TUCKER, St James — Corinaldi Avenue Primary broke an almost 30-year drought on Wednesday when they beat Flankers Primary 2-1 in the final of the St James Football Association/Victoria Mutual Foundation Uplift Under-13 competition at WesPow Park, completing a perfect season.
Corinaldi Avenue last won the competition in 1994 when they secured back-to-back titles, and were beating Flankers Primary for the second time this season after dereating them by a similar scoreline in the first round.
In the third-place game Barracks Road Primary edged Green Pond High 1-0, with Thisiyd Decarish scoring the winning goal in the 14th minute.
Shevaun Brown, who was later named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the competition, opened the scoring in the sixth minute but Everald Lindsay equalised in the ninth minute and they were tied 1-1 at half-time.
Hasani Nelson scored the winner in the second minute of the second half, in minute 32 when he powered home a shot from the left side, high into the Flankers Primary goal.
The win was the eighth straight for Corinaldi Avenue Primary after they topped Zone B with five wins, then beat Catherine Hall Primary in the quarter-finals, and then Green Pond Primary in the semi-finals.
Flankers Primary, who were runners-up to Corinaldi Avenue in the group stages, beat John Rollins Success Primary in the quarter-final before upsetting Barracks Road Primary in the semis.
