Jackson third, Ricketts fourth at Oslo Diamond League meeting
Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson was beaten into third place in the women’s 100m at the Bislett Games on Oslo, Norway, on Thursday, the fifth stop on the Wanda Diamond League series, running 10.98 seconds (0.9m/s).
Jackson, who has a season’s best 10.78 seconds, got off to a sluggish start and despite chasing the leaders, was never able to close the gap as Marie-Josee Ta Lou ran a world leading and meet record 10.75 seconds with Kingston-based Anthonique Strachan placing second with a personal best 10.92 seconds, third best ever by a Bahamian.
Rushell Clayton ran a season’s best 53.84 seconds to finish second in the women’s 400m hurdles; Danniel Thomas-Dodd was third in the women’s triple jump; Shanieka Ricketts recovered from a bad start to place fourth in the women’s triple jump, while Tajay Gayle was sixth in the men’s long jump.
Clayton, who had previously run 54.14 seconds at the Rabat Diamond League meeting, got off to a fast start but was caught by Holland’s Femke Bol, who ran away to win in 52.30 seconds, lowering the meet record and improving on her previous world leading time of 52.43 seconds.
“I wanted to execute a great race and have been working so hard, I messed up a little bit but finished strong so I am quite happy with tonight,” Clayton said after the race.
“This is my third race outside of Jamaica this season but my National Trials are coming up, so that’s next. I hope to win another medal in Budapest,” she also said, adding “I’m grateful to be a part of such a great, improving event with the ladies like Femke and Sydney [McLaughlin-Levrone], and I’m excited for the remainder to see what I can do against them.”
Commonwealth Games champion Janieve Russell ran 54.91 seconds and was fourth behind Panama’s Gianna Woodruff, who ran a season’s best 54.46 seconds.
Thomas-Dodd threw 19.44m in the shot put, the same as American Chase Ealey, and Portugal’s Diamond League leader Auriol Dongmo, but the Jamaican placed third on the tie breaker, having a better second distance of 19.32m.
Her best throw came in the second round after she had opened with 19.07m. Canadian Sara Mitton won with 19.54m while American world leader Maggie Ewan placed second with 19.52m.
Ricketts fouled her first two jumps but recovered to place fourth with 14.33m (0.8m/s) as world record holder Yulimar Rojas of Venezuela won with a wind-aided 14.91m (2.1m/s) in the first round.
Cuba’s Leyanis Perez-Hernandez jumped a personal best 14.87m (1.4m/s) for second place while Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk of Ukraine jumped a season’s best 1.75m (0.4m/s) on her final jump for third.
Gayle had a best mark of 7.87m (1.0m/s) to place sixth as Switzerland’s Simon Ehammer surprised the field to win with a season’s best 8.32m (0.0m/s), beating American Marquis Dendy’s 8.26m (0.6m/s) and Greece’s Miltiadis Tentoglou third with 8.21m (-0.5m/s).
