Courtney Williams celebrates first career winner
Courtney Williams joined his two other batchmates, Barrington Bernard and Ricardo Mathie, in celebrating their first winners on Saturday, June 10, 2023, when Zion won the seventh race, giving him his first career winner as well.
Zion, a five-year-old bay horse, won the Restricted Allowance III race for native-bred five-year-olds and upward (non-winners of four) and imported five-year-olds and upward (non-winners of three) over 7 furlongs (1,400m) by 4 ¼ lengths.
“I’m proud to say that I bred, owned, and trained this horse. I feel good about winning my first race because it was the result of all the hard work that has gone into this,” Williams told The Supreme Racing Guide.
Ridden by Phillip Parchment, Zion settled in second place for most of the way behind Little Grovy Thing (Oshane Nugent). Zion took over proceedings approaching the distance and went on to win easily ahead of Fault Line (Reyan Lewis) and Kwaku (Tevin Foster).
“One of my friends named Rocky loved the game more than anything, and I believe he loved it more than I did, and that is how I got into racing. He’s actually my best friend, and I’ve been in the game since that day,” Williams explained.
“I currently have about 10 horses under my care, and one can expect good things from me,” he added.
