Protecting the magnificent manatees
Dear Editor,
I am writing to express my concern for the survival of the magnificent manatees that reside in our Jamaican waters.
These gentle creatures, also known as sea cows, are facing various risks that threaten their survival. We must take immediate action to protect these amazing mammals and ensure they live on for generations.
Manatees are aquatic animals that can be found in warm coastal waters, rivers, and springs. They are known for their large round bodies and flat tails. Unfortunately, manatees are currently facing multiple challenges that have caused their population to decrease. One of the main threats is loss of habitat due to urbanisation in coastal areas and pollution. As human activities spread to their natural habitats, manatees are losing the sea grass beds they depend on for food and shelter. Also, manatees are frequent victims of boat strikes as they are slow swimmers and often cannot avoid collisions, resulting in serious injuries or death.
To conclude, the protection of manatees is of the greatest importance. We have a responsibility to protect these unique marine animals and their habitats from further harm. By raising awareness, implementing strict rules and regulations, and preserving their natural environment, we can ensure a brighter future for the manatees. We must come together to take the necessary steps to ensure the survival of these incredible creatures.
