Delivery truck drivers warned of robberies in St Ann
OCHO RIOS, St Ann – The St Ann police are urging truck drivers who do deliveries in sections of the parish to be on the lookout for fake calls and also robbers on their route.
“We are seeing some robberies in the Claremont, Moneague area of delivery trucks. So we are advising delivery trucks to check the source of the calls that they receive for deliveries. Up to yesterday (Thursday) we were treating with a situation in Moneague of a truck that transports goods,” said Senior Superintendent of Police Dwight Powell.
The superintendent, who is in charge of policing in the parish, was speaking during the monthly meeting of the St Ann Municipal Corporation.
According to the police, trucks are often targeted at an “in-need-of-repair section of the road” in Moneague which forces motorists to drive slowly.
“As soon as the motorists slow down they are prone to robbers. So I will be reaching out to our partners at NWA (National Works Agency) to see how soon we can have that situation corrected,” Powell promised.
He pointed out, however, that despite the attacks on delivery trucks the parish had seen a 60 per cent reduction in robberies when compared to the corresponding period last year.
“There have been 16 robberies since the start of the year, compared to 41 last year. I want to commend the police for their effort that they continue to push forward for the reduction that we are seeing in this category of acquisitory crime,” Powell said.
