Smith completes Big 12 jumps double
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Two- time Commonwealth Games finalist, Ackelia Smith of the University of Texas completed the long/triple jump double at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships on Sunday when she won the triple jump with 13.75m (-0.6m/s) on Sunday’s final day in Oklahoma.
A day after she won the long jump with a personal best 7.08m (0.0m/s), the second best ever by a Jamaican, Smith who also competed in the double at the World Championships, won the triple jump to complete the double.
There were also wins for Nikaoli Williams of the University of Oklahoma who jumped 7.80m (1.6m/s), while Demisha Roswell of Texas Tech won the 100m hurdles with 13.02 seconds (1.0m/s).
In the Big10 Outdoor Championships that was held at the University of Indiana, Lotavia Brown of the University of Nebraska jumped a personal best 13.33m (1.0m/s) to win the women’s triple jump.
There were also wins at the American Athletics Championship in Tampa, Florida where Sanique Walker of the University of South Florida set a Conference record 55.87 seconds to win the women’s 400m hurdles.
Shevioe Reid, also of USF won the men’s 400m final with 45.96 seconds.
