Beenie Man remembers his mother in song
Reputed King of the Dancehall Beenie Man is the fifth child for his mother, Lilieth “Mama Lilieth” Sewell. When she passed away following complications brought on by a stroke, Beenie Man was devastated.
The Grammy-winning deejay collapsed at her funeral in October 2020, a month after she transitioned.
“This will be my third Mother’s Day without my mother, and I miss her. We were very close, I always confided in her,” Beenie Man shared in an interview with the Jamaica Observer on Wednesday.
On Friday he released a song in tribute to Miss Lilieth, titled Goodbye. The song features two other entertainers who have also lost their mothers, Viia Boss and Hirawkey.
“I remember when I became successful and I bought a house for her and said we were going to move out of Waterhouse, and the look she gave me was unforgettable. I loved her then and I still love her now,” said Beenie Man.
Goodbye is a joint production between Beenie Man and his brother Rohan “Blue” Smith for their MD Entertainment label.
The veteran deejay said the timing was right to pay tribute to his mother in song because he previously didn’t have the energy to do it.
“Two other artistes who lost their mothers decided they wanted to be part of a song that dealt with losing their mothers, so we did the song. It was a good vibe,” said Beenie Man.
