Popcaan, Grace Jones featured on Gorillaz gold-certified album
Jamaican actress, singer and model Grace Jones and dancehall artiste Popcaan are featured on the gold-certified album Humanz by British act Gorillaz.
Humanz was on Wednesday certified gold in France for sales exceeding 50,000 units. The certification was issued by the National Syndicate of Phonographic Publishing (SNEP).
The album was previously certified gold in Canada (40,000 units), Poland (50,000 units), and in the United Kingdom (100,000 units). It has sold more than 500,000 units worldwide.
In an interview with the Jamaica Observer, Popcaan commented on the achievements of Humanz.
“It’s a great feeling to see the accomplishments. I do what I do for the love of music first… that level of success just increases the energy to continue to do it. As for what I think it does for me and dancehall: This is for all the people who think you have to change who you are as Jamaican or as a dancehall artiste for great things to happen. We just give God thanks and keep working hard, that’s all’, said Popcaan.
He is featured on the track Saturnz Barz, which peaked at #5 on Billboard’s Hot Rock Songs chart and #87 on the UK Singles chart in 2017.
Jones is featured on the track Charger.
Rhythm and blues singers Anthony Hamilton and Mavis Staples, pop singer Carly Simon, Rag’n Bone Man and rap outfit De La Soul also appear on Humanz.
The album was partly recorded between New York City, London, Paris and Gee Jam Studio in Portland, Jamaica. It was also nominated in the 60th Grammy Awards for Best Alternative Music Album.
Humanz did well commercially in its opening week. It sold 140,000 copies to debut at #2 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. It debuted at #2 in the United Kingdom and made the top 10 in 21 other countries.
