Alana Reid dismantles field to win 100m
National junior 100 metres record holder Alana Reid produced a scintillating performance to win the girls’ 100m at the East Coast International Showcase in Maryland on Friday.
Reid, 18, clocked an impressive 11.01 seconds to win the event comfortably ahead of Adaejah Hodge from the British Virgin Islands, who was second in 11.16.
Hodge, who won the Under-17 sprint double at the Carifta Games in 2022 in Jamaica, proved no match for Reid who dismantled the field to win the event.
That time was the second fastest time of Reid’s career behind her personal best of 10.92 seconds which she achieved at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships in March of this year. The fleet-footed Reid was very pleased with her performance.
“To be honest, I am very pleased with the time because I came out here to do my best and I am pleased with my performance,” said Reid.
“I was just focusing on myself and what I needed to do to win and I went out and did that and I ended the race injury-free and so I am also grateful for that. I also enjoyed running out here because the atmosphere was good because this was my first individual international race representing my school,” Reid stated.
“She [Hodge] is a great athlete, but it was just for me to focus on myself and I did that by winning the event,” Reid said.
Adrian Kerr from Motorcade track and Kingston College had to settle for third in the boys’ 100m in 10.40 seconds. The event was won by Kyckloes Habor from Archbishop Caroll in 10.28. Excelsior High’s Demor Millier was fourth in 10.56.
St Elizabeth Technical’s High School (STETHS) Jasauna Dennis had to settle for second in the boys’ 400m in 47.01 seconds behind the winner Quincy Wilson from the Bullis School who won the event in 46.01.
Edwin Allen’s Delano Kennedy finished a disappointing fourth in the race in 48.98.
Reigning Carifta Games 400m champion Rickiann Russell was a second-place finisher in the one-lap event in 52.54. The race was won by Madison Whyte from Heritage High School in 52.49, while third went to Abigail Campbell from Hydel in 53.30.
Edwin Allen’s Bryan Levell finished fourth in the boys’ 200m in 21.34. The race was won by the American rising star Issam Asinga in 20.81.
In the field, STETHS’s RojKia Campbell captured the girls’ long jump event with a mark of 5.28m in front of her teammate Richelle Stanley who cut the sand at 5.25m. Holmwood’s Technical’s Cedricka Williams comfortably won the girls’ discus throw event with a mark of 53.60m. Andrea Countiss from Gar-Field High was second with a mark of 33.10m
