Beckford retains Penn Relays high jump title
PHILADELPHIA, USA – Romaine Beckford retained his College Men’s High Jump Championships title on Saturday’s final day of the 127th Penn Relays Carnival at Franklin Field in Philadelphia while Kai Chang of UWI-Mona won the College Men’s Discus Throw Championships.
Beckford of the University of South Florida who won the NCAA Indoor title held off Ohio State’s Shaun Miller to win on count back for the second-straight year as both men battled to the wire a year ago.
Both men cleared 2.18m but while Beckford got over the bar on his first effort, Miller needed two tries.
Chang dominated the competition to win the discus throw with 60.62m, winning by almost four metres while Daniel Cope of Clemson University who fouled out in the hammer throw on Thursday, was eighth in the discus with 51.65m from just two legal throws.
Shamella Donaldson was second in the College Women’s Discus Throw Championships with 47.14m with Marie Forbes of Clemson placing third with 47.05m and Shania Scott of the University of Albany placing sixth with 42.39m.
Forbes was also fourth in the College women’s Hammer Throw Championships with a mark of 62.34m.
Nia Robinson of the University of South Florida jumped a season’s best 6.44m for second in the College Women’s Long Jump Championships as Malik Cunningham of Villanova was also second in the men’s triple jump with 16.08m.
Lashanna Graham of Clemson finished second in the College Women’s 400m hurdles championships after running 56.58 seconds while Sanique Walker of the University of South Florida was third in 57.14 seconds.
Albany’s Scott was fourth in the College Women’s shot put on Friday with 14.08m; Roschell Clayton was eighth in the College Women’s high jump with 1.69m while Danielle Sloley of Clemson threw 15.84m for eighth place in the College Women’s Shot Put Championships.
