We must respond to AI threat
Dear Editor,
As the world continues to advance in technology, it’s imperative that our education system keeps up. In Jamaica we must recognise the threat of artificial intelligence (AI) and how it will affect our current curriculum.
The current Jamaican curriculum emphasises the importance of traditional subjects, such as maths, science, and English. However, as AI becomes more prevalent in our society, it’s essential that our education system focuses on developing skills that cannot be replaced by machines.
AI has the potential to revolutionise the classroom of the future. With the help of AI, teachers can provide a personalised learning experiences for each student. This would mean that students can learn at their own pace and receive support when needed, allowing them to reach their full potential.
The future of chalk and talk or whiteboard and marker is becoming obsolete, as teachers will need to work alongside AI partners to ensure no student gets left behind. AI can provide data on each student’s strengths and weaknesses, allowing teachers to tailor their lesson plans and provide targeted support.
However, this will require significant training for teachers, who will need to learn how to use AI technology to its fullest potential and understand how to integrate it into their teaching styles. Without proper training, the benefits of AI may be lost.
We must recognise the potential threat of AI to our education system in Jamaica. We need to adapt our curriculum to include skills that cannot be replaced by machines and provide adequate training for teachers. By doing so, we can ensure that our students are prepared for the ever-changing technological landscape.
