It’s D-Day as Portmore hunt final play-off spot
It’s D-Day for Portmore United as they face a must-win situation against a Waterhouse FC team they are hoping to leapfrog into the final play-off spot when they clash at Ferdie Neita Park today at 4:00 pm.
With this being the penultimate round of the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) heading into the play-offs, Waterhouse holds the last spot sitting sixth position on 40 points with Portmore United four points adrift on 36 points.
A Waterhouse win would end Portmore’s play-off ambitions, while a win for Portmore United would take them within a point of Waterhouse with one game remaining.
Waterhouse end the preliminary round against a tough Humble Lion and Portmore play an out-of-contention Molynes United.
With this in mind, today’s game at the Ferdie Neita Park between home team Portmore United and Waterhouse is more critical for Portmore United who must win as a draw would be good for Waterhouse.
Meanwhile, fifth-placed Humble Lion, on 40 points, cannot sit on their laurels as they too can be gobbled up if Portmore wins and they face a most formidable opponent in a third-placed Mount Pleasant team on 46 points and still in the hunt for a top-two finish which pushes them into the semi-finals.
There is a lot to play for at the Effortville Community Centre but the pressure is on the Clarendon-based Humble Lion to deliver. Match time is 3:00 pm.
There will be three other games on today of academic interest. At the Edward Seaga Stadium home team Tivoli Gardens play Montego Bay United at 3:00 pm. Both teams are out of contention for a play-off spot or relegation so only pride is at stake. Montego Bay United are 10th on 26 points while Tivoli Gardens are 11th on 19 points.
The relegated duo Faulkland FC and Chapelton Maroons will be in action against Vere United and Dunbeholden, respectively, in a double-header at the Ashenhiem Stadium.
Faulkland sitting in 12th spot on 11 points take on 12th-placed Vere United at 3:00 pm before bottom-placed team Chapelton Maroons on eight points tackle Dunbeholden in eighth spot with 35 points.
On Monday the double-header will be at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex where at 5:00 pm second-placed Cavalier, on 46 points, play ninth-placed Molynes, on 30 points, before home team Arnett Gardens tackle Harbour View at 7:30 pm.
