MBU’s Allan Ottey hungers for overseas move
TUCKER, St James — Former Reggae Boy and two-time Premier League winner Allan Ottey plans to be back in the island’s top league next season with Montego Bay United, if he is not playing overseas that is.
The 30 year-old, who has been having one of his best seasons in recent years, scored the 50th goal of his long club career in Jamaica last Sunday as Montego Bay United beat Faulkland FC in the Montego Bay derby — a victory that secured their place in the league next season.
“Definitely, I will be back next season,” Ottey told the Jamaica Observer after scoring his eighth goal of the season. He is the top scorer at Montego Bay United.
“My career is not over. I’m still looking forward to a greater season [for] next season [and] I am looking forward to playing, even to go overseas,” he added.
Since he started playing in the 2010 season for Village United, fresh out of the ISSA daCosta Cup competition where he was part of the St James High team that won the daCosta Cup/Ben Francis KO double in 2008, Ottey has played in over 230 games.
Ottey also spent time at Portmore United, Waterhouse and Mt Pleasant before returning to MBU where he won two Premier League titles and became a fixture in the national team. He told the Jamaica Observer he has accepted the role of team’s ‘senior statesman’.
“This has been the best season for me in a long time. Because of some young talented players that we have here, as the oldest player on the team I am looked on to lead,” he shared.
Ottey, who scored the team’s first goal of the season against Portmore United late in the opening game of that period to salvage a draw, said there have been a few highlights of the season so far but he is not ready to celebrate as yet.
Being only two goals away from double-digit returns, he said they still had some work to do.
“Our goal was to reach the top six but we just have to refocus again and just build on this for the league next season.”
