Mt Alvernia defeat Holland in girls’ basketball
HOLLAND, Trelawny — Mt Alvernia High School held off hosts Holland High to win their ISSA Western Conference Girls’ Open basketball semi-final 29-22 on Wednesday to qualify for Friday’s final set to be played at Cornwall College.
Jayla-Shae Wright scored a game-high 15 points to lead Mt Alvernia High who will now take on favourites Herbert Morrison Technical in the decider.
This was Mt Alvernia’s second win over Holland High this season after the Trelawny school had won their first meeting.
On Tuesday, Herbert Morrison Technical extended their perfect win record, beating Irwin High 50-19 in Montego Bay to book their place in the final.
In Wednesday’s game, the teams were tied at 4-4 after the first quarter but the Montego Bay team took the lead 11-6 at half-time, but Holland High rallied in the third quarter to cut the deficit to three points, 20-17, going into the fourth quarter,
Wright also had eight rebounds, while Tiana Spence and Caustina Holness also scored five points each for Mt Alvernia High.
Brianna Edwards scored seven points and had 13 rebounds and three blocked shots for Holland High, Jemelia Hines also scored seven points and had four rebounds while Tessanne Nesbeth scored four points and had four rebounds.
On Tuesday, Herbert Morrison took charge of the game early as they raced to a third win over Irwin after winning the first two games 86-16 and 61-15.
Led by 14 points from Taveena Clarke and 12 from Dandreika Whittingham, Herbert Morrison led 16-4 after the first quarter, 28-10 at half-time and 40-13 after the third quarter.
Nejron Stephenson, Loren Hosang and Tahirah Shaw all scored six points each for Herbert Morrison while Bianca Maxwell scored four points and had 13 rebounds.
Elise Brown scored eight points and had eight rebounds for Irwin High, Breana Hawthorne scored five points and also had eight rebounds.
