Chief Justice Lensley Wolfe will be missed
Dear Editor,
I was sad when I heard today of the passing of Chief Justice Lensley Wolfe.
I met the chief justice briefly at his home some years ago and I was mesmerised by his attention to detail.
I remember when I was in high school during the 1980s I used to read the daily papers, including The Star, and I read about one particular incident in which he confronted a young man who was accused of a stabbing at the Kingston Senior High School. During the sentencing, Justice Wolfe told the accused that he committed a heinous crime and he used the term “young machete” (an extra-ordinarily large knife) to describe the weapon of choice. I was really fascinated by the use of that term, and from that time I was always impressed by the terms used by these judges to describe anything in a court room setting in their legal arguments. Hence, from that time forth, I always read the aphorisms of these learned judges.
I think we need more stern judges like him, as the crime rate has really spiralled out of control, to preserve the integrity of the justice system. I really hope the justice system will produce more stalwart judges like him.
Walk good Justice Wolfe, and may your soul rest in peace.
