‘I’m the most displeased person’ says education minister on salary delays
ST JAMES, Jamaica— Minister of Education and Youth Fayval Williams says she is unhappy whenever the payment of teachers’ salaries are delayed, or incorrect.
The minister made the comments while delivering greetings at the opening ceremony of the Teachers’ Colleges of Jamaica Bi-Annual Research Conference, at the Holiday Inn Resort in Rose Hall, St James on Wednesday.
The conference is being held under the theme: “Preparing Teachers for the Next Education Task Force: Implications for National Development.”
“We want to know our teachers get paid on time and that their pay cheque is correct. When it doesn’t happen, I am the most displeased person,” Williams said.
“Know that the Ministry of Education and Youth, we’re here to support you despite what is being said in social media and otherwise. That’s not the mindset of the Ministry of Education and Youth,” she added.
The education minister went on to express the ministry’s commitment to the teaching profession.
“I want you to know that this Ministry of Education and Youth is committed to the teaching profession, committed to ensuring that we have better outcomes. And we know it’s not just the teachers in the classroom. It is the parents, it is the transport operators who drive our children from yard gate to school gate, it’s the environment in which they grow up in communities, it’s the churches, it’s a lot of factors; a lot of players, a lot of stakeholders in the process. And we are committed to ensuring that they each have their impact on education,” she said
