Hayles powers Bristol City title charge
LONDON, England (CMC) — Jamaica’s Shania Hayles bagged a first-half brace and Bristol City ran riot with a 5-0 win at Sunderland on Sunday to close in on the second-tier English FA Women’s Championship title.
The 23-year-old United Kingdom-born striker, who made her debut for Jamaica two years ago, set City — nicknamed the Robins — on their way with goals on 35 and 40 minutes, taking her tally for the season to 11 to put Lauren Smith’s side two goals to the good at the break.
Ella Powell then marked her 50th club appearance with her first goal, with Jazz Bull also netting her first for the side late on.
Abi Harrison rounded off a five-star performance in stoppage time to put her side within one win of the league title.
Hayles broke the deadlock when Rachel Furness delivered a deft cross from the left after a Bristol City corner broke loose.
Brooke Aspin forced an excellent stop from Claudia Moan but the Black Cats goalkeeper could do nothing to deny Hayles on the rebound.
With five minutes of the half to play, Hayles doubled her tally after latching onto a through-ball from Grace Clinton and smashing home from the edge of the area.
Head Coach Smith, whose side are home to fourth-place Charlton Athletic next Sunday, said afterwards, “The whole team played their part.”
Bristol City currently hold a six-point lead over London City Lionesses with two matches left, and are seven points clear of Birmingham City who have a match in hand and host the Robins on the final day of the season on April 30.
