Harbour View blank Waterhouse 2-0 in JPL
WHAT do Harbour View FC and Jesus Christ have in common? Both rose on Resurrection Sunday. That’s how their Assistant Coach Sean Fraser sees it anyway.
The “Stars of the East” were comfortable in a 2-0 win over hosts Waterhouse at the Drewsland Stadium in St Andrew on Sunday. It was a win that pushed them up to third in the Jamaica Premier League table on 39 points, one place above Mount Pleasant (38) who drew 0-0 with league leaders Arnett Gardens.
“Today is Resurrection Sunday so we give thanks and praise to our lord, Jesus Christ, for this victory. Jesus is risen,” Fraser told reporters after the game.
Harbour View went down 0-4 to Waterhouse in their first-round meeting, and Fraser said that result was on their minds heading into this game. That may be why it only took them 19 minutes to go in front, with Cristojaye Daley capitalising on sloppy defending by the Waterhouse backline.
Harbour View could’ve doubled that lead in minute 57 when Referee Daneon Parchment judged Waterhouse defender Keithy Simpson to have handled the ball in the box. But the resulting penalty was put over the bar by Harbour View striker Colorado Murray. He was not to be denied though, as Simpson rushed out for a ball over the top but misjudged it. Murray was left with time and space down the right side after collecting the loose ball and overcame a feeble challenge from Malik Cockings to fire past Kemar Foster and make it 2-0. It was just one of many errors by Cockings who was verbally abused by the Waterhouse fans for the majority of the game.
“He was thrown in the water and sometimes when you go in the water, you have to swim,” Waterhouse Head Coach Marcel Gayle said. “Just a little bit more sharpness from him today would’ve brought about a better performance but Colorado is a good player. Today he showed it. It’s unfortunate that we couldn’t keep him quiet.”
Waterhouse tried to get back into the game but struggled to find a way to break down the Harbour View backline.
Gayle was gracious in defeat, praising the opponents while admitting to what he describes as silly mistakes by his team.
Waterhouse slip to seventh in the table with their loss, still on 34 points, as Portmore United leapfrog them on goal difference after beating Tivoli Gardens 2-1.
