Criminals are in charge
Dear Editor,
I don’t think I am the only one who holds the view that well-organised criminals are now in control of our country. Their actions have caused widespread panic.
How could it not be true that criminals are in charge of Jamaica when we see daily — and it has become the norm — marauding gunmen, who show no fear of the law, ruthlessly snuffing out the life of fellow citizens. Most of them are never caught.
How could it not be true when we see instances in which armed gunmen with high-powered weapons opening fire, killing, maiming, and robbing armoured security personnel of the money they deliver to automated teller machines (ATMs).
How could it not be true that criminals are in control of Jamaica when we see citizens cowering in public spaces on seeing an armoured vehicle drive up to businesses and run for cover in fear of being caught in the crossfire.
How could it not be true when we see banks close down ATMs across Jamaica for fear of them being robbed.
Banking customers in my parish now endure much hardship because they have to travel to the parish capital to access ATM banking. If banks are fearful of being robbed, just imagine senior citizens and other citizens who will be targeted when they travel long distances to conduct ATM transactions.
Who is speaking up for the citizens?
