Hydel’s Christie claims heptathlon title
Hydel High’s Sherika Christie won the heptathlon title during the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships at the National Stadium on Saturday’s final day after leading overnight.
Christie, who led after Friday’s first four events with 2,965 points, finished with 4,868 points after adding 1,903 points in the final three events on Saturday.
Sherika Thomas of Glengoffe High held on to second place, totalling 4,560 points, while Edwin Allen High’s Ishna James, who was third coming into the day, won the bronze medal with 4,063 points.
James won the long jump, which was the first event on Saturday, with 5.42m (3.1m/s). But Christie was not far behind, with 5.26m (4.1m/s), while Immaculate Conception’s Mireya Simpson was third with 5.20m.
Christie won the javelin throw with a heptathlon record 39.76m for 663 points, ahead of Westwood High’s Saffron Lyons (30.08m) and Petersfield High’s Tawani Murray (29.48m).
Thomas was the fastest in the 800m with 2:30.09 minutes, while Christie was next best with 2:36.91, and Lyons third with 2:38.75.
