St Jago’s Dawkins shines in field event with double gold
Jade-Ann Dawkins of St Jago successfully secured double gold medal at this 113th edition of the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships when she topped the triple jump Open at the National Stadium on Friday.
Dawkins was always expected to score significant points for her Monk Street-based school and she didn’t disappoint.
She cut the sand at 13.20m to better more experienced rivals and add the triple jump title to her Class Two long jump honours. Celine Riddle (12.96m) of Holmwood Technical was second and Jade-Ann Smith (12.01m) of Excelsior, third.
St Catherine’s Gabrilla Treasure displayed the right attitude and with it she was able to reach the right altitude to capture the Girls’ Class Four high jump title.
Treasure, who was expected to be one of the bridesmaids to overwhelming favourite Chanel Clarke of Mount Alvernia, proved otherwise, as she cleared the bar at 1.55m to win.
Stefvanco Henry of Campion College, who also cleared 1.55m, had to settle for second on the count back, while there was a three-way tie for bronze. The Wolmer’s Girls pair of Adajah Drysdale and Kariecia Morrison, as well as Holmwood Technical’s Jannessa Allen, all cleared 1.50m on their first attempts and later failed at 1.55m.
Vere Technical’s Torian Carven, last year’s Class Two high jump champion, added the Class one title to her name, topping a quality field in what was one of the most competitive field events final of the championship.
Carven cleared the bar at 1.82m, finishing ahead of Rasheda Samuels (1.79m) of Edwin Allen, with St Elizabeth Technical’s Richelle Stanley (1.70m) third.
Much like she did en route to the Central Champs title, St Jago’s Jessica Thompson again stringed together a consistent series of throws to capture the Girls’ Class Three discus gold medal.
Thompson’s best throw of 38.00m was not for beating, with her main rival Kayla Honeywell (35.50m) of Excelsior some ways back in second, while Hydel’s Brandane Malcolm (34.25m) upstaged more fancied competitors to snatch bronze.
It was a one-two finish for reigning champions Edwin Allen in the Girls’ Class Two discus, as Dionjah Shaw (46.27m) proved too good for the competition, with Shamoyea Morris (44.95m) taking silver. Clarendon College’s Marla-Kay Lampart (43.15m) was third.
