Money Monster gobbles up rivals to land King’s Plate
As expected, the $1.14 million King’s Plate feature race turned out to be an easy romp as the 1-2 favourite Money Monster strode away imperiously from rivals to win the Overnight Allowance contest in encouraging fashion at Caymanas Park on Saturday.
Money Monster — bred, owned, and trained by Fitzroy Glispie — took up the running shortly after turning for home and powered home easily by 4½ lengths in the seven-and-a-half furlong (1,500m) race.
With Reyan Lewis riding, Money Monster just sat off the pace in fourth place down the backstretch, tracking Freedom Street (Javaniel Patterson), who recovered from a poor start to set the pace ahead of Eagle One (Robert Halledeen) and Big Big Daddy (Richard Henry).
Going into the half-mile turn, the runner order remained the same until approaching the distance, when both Eagle One and Money Monster surrounded Freedom Street in what looked like a match race from here on.
However, turning for home, Money Monster hit another gear, leaving runners in his wake as the six-year-old bay gelding went on to win easily ahead of Crimson (Raddesh Roman) and Big Big Daddy. The final time for the race was 1:33.4 (24.0 x 47.1 x 1:12.2).
It was the third winner on the day for Lewis, as the younger rider won aboard Fault Line for champion trainer Jason DaCosta in the opening event and Platinum Force for many-time champion Philip Feanny in the 10th and final event.
Jockey Anthony Thomas had a double in Hunter’s Ridge for trainer Steven Todd in the fifth race, and One Like It for trainer Gresford Smith in the eighth race.
Racing continues with an Easter weekend carnival of races on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
