Five the hard way
1. Serena Cole — Class 1 100m and long jump
Double threat sensation Serena Cole is the undisputed team leader for the defending champions and should inspire the others with her performances both on the track and in the pit.
Her clash with Alana Reid of Hydel in the 100m should be one of the highlights of the championship but with a season best of 11.18 seconds, Cole is favoured to get the better of her rival and put Veronica Campbell-Brown’s record of 11.13 seconds under threat.
Cole is also the defending champion in the long jump and comes in ranked third with a mark of 5.84 metres. Expect a fiery battle with Aaliyah Foster of Mt Alvernia, who is the top seed in the event with 6.19 metres to her credit.
2. Kevona-Gaye Fletcher — Class 3 800m and 1,500m
Unbeaten all season in the 800 and 1,500 metres with times of 2:13.24 and 4:47.93, Fletcher is expected to continue her dominance in both events at Champs.
3. Monique Spencer — Class 2 800m and 1,500m
Spencer has been the key figure in Edwin Allen’s success in the 4×800 metres relays this season and looks set to claim victory in the individual event, which she leads this season with a 2:12.12 clocking. She should also dominate the 1,500m having registered the fastest qualifying time this season, 4:41.43.
4. Kacian Powell — Class 1 200m and 400m
One of the most improved athletes in the Edwin Allen team, Powell is expected to score vital points in both the 200 and 400 metres where she is ranked number three amongst her peers in both events with times of 23.62 and 53.28 seconds.
5. Sheniela Williams — Open Javelin
Edwin Allen should score maximum points in the javelin throw as Williams, who has a season best and personal best of 41.00 metres, is way ahead of her peers.
