JC set to dominate field events in hunt for glory
JAMAICA College has a realistic chance of unseating defending champions Kingston College for the boys’ title at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships, with their powerful cohort of Class Two jumpers leading the charge.
JC looks well set to win all the jumping events in the class, with their second-string athletes also well positioned to score heavily. A quinella is on the cards in both the long and triple jump as Euan Young, who has a season-best 14.81 metres, should win ahead of teammate Michael Edwards whose season-best 14.29 metres has him ranked at number two.
Both athletes will also clash in the long jump where Edwards is this time the leader with a mark of 6.84m, which puts him just ahead of Young (6.79m).
High jumper Jaidi James has cleared 2.00m and should make it a clean sweep of the jumps in the class by copping gold in this event.
Denzil Phillips’s best of 15.88m is the best distance in the Class Two shot put, and he will be joined by Cleon Spence for an all out assault on the discus points.
JC’s good showing should also carry over in Class One and in the Open category.
Chavez Penn (2.07m) will deliver big points in the high jump as well as the triple jump where he and Trevon Winston Hamer are ranked second and third going into the championships with marks of 15.23m and 15.21m, respectively.
Darian Charles and Gabriel Lim have been the two best athletes all season in the Open javelin event and should take the two top podium spots.
Led by Kemarrio Bygrave in the Class One 800m and 1500m, Jamaica College also has a quality team in the middle distances and are also expected to score heavily in the Open 4x400m and sprint medley relays.
