Race on for semi-final spots of girls’ basketball
WAKEFIELD, Trelawny — The race is on for places in the semi-finals of the ISSA Western Conference Girls’ Open basketball competition as the second round draws to a close with five points separating second place from sixth place.
With leaders Herbert Morrison certain to finish at the top of the points tables after winning their first six games and with just four more to be played, the other teams will be jockeying for the remaining three spots.
The semi-finals and finals were originally scheduled for next week but they will be pushed back as two rounds of games, including the games that were scheduled for Monday, were rained out and will be rescheduled.
Weather permitting today, second-place Mt Alvernia High face sixth-place William Knibb Memorial in the first game of a double-header at Muschett High in Wakefield, Trelawny, while in the second game fourth-place Irwin High take on fifth-place Muschett High.
In Montego Bay, leaders Herbert Morrison and third-place Holland High will square off.
Herbert Morrison will be going after their seventh-straight win and the odds are that they should win after a 57-35 margin in the first round.
Mt Alvernia High are expected to strengthen their hold on second place with a victory today after they had beaten winless William Knibb Memorial 32-19 in the first round and won their last two games in a row.
The game between Muschett High and Irwin High could go either way after Irwin held on to win by one point in a 24-23 scoreline in the first round.
