St Jago relying on field events, juniors in fight for third place
PROJECTED POINTS – 170 points (Fourth)
Over the years St Jago High has been one of the standard bearers amongst the female teams at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls Athletics Championships.
The Spanish Town-based team has churned out many Olympians in the past and is more often than not featuring in the top three in the girls’ competition.
This time around, the Keilando Goburn-coached team will have their work cut out for them if they are to maintain that top three position as the largely inexperienced squad will find it hard to keep pace with defending champions Edwin Allen and central champions Hydel, who are expected to have a dog fight for top honours with a resurgent Holmwood Technical eager to spoil the party.
St Jago’s strength this time around is in the field where they will be led by Jade Ann Dawkins who looks a cinch for the Class Two long jump and Open triple jump titles.
Her season best of 6.12m in the long jump sees her as the only athlete in the class over the six metres barrier in the event and her best of 13.24 metres in the triple jump, which was done at the Carifta Trials, sees her entering Champs with the best mark this season.
Others like Jessica Thompson in the Class Two discus, Abigail Martin in the Class One discus and Kimeka Smith in the Class Two Shot Put event, are expected to score heavily for them in the field but they will need support on the track if they are to hold off former champions Holmwood for the number three spot.
Their efforts on the track will be led by some of their younger athletes with Class Four sprinter Trecia Ann Grant and Class Three pair Adora Campbell and Poshanna Lee Blake expected to score some quality points.
Class Two sprinters Krystal Hoolong and Briana Campbell as well as sprint hurdler Bryana Davidson should also be amongst the medals and will team up in the 4×100 metres relay where they are expected to do well following their success in the event at the Gibson McCook Relays.
St Jago’s girls are not as strong in Class One as they were in former years and they will be relying heavily on their younger team members to deliver the goods if they are to achieve the unlikely result of staying ahead of Holmwood Technical in third. In fact, they might be more concerned about the dangerous St Catherine High, which could push them further down the pack.
