Rav4 win Duane Smith netball crown
RAV4 emerged winners of the Duane Smith Annual Netball Rally held on Ash Wednesday at Sherlock Crescent MultiPurpose Court, Duhaney Park, St Andrew.
With an incentive of $2 million on offer, including over $400,000 in cash prizes, Rav4 conquered all to win the $150,000 first-place cash jackpot, ahead of 20 other participating teams on a fun-filled day of netball that attracted hundreds of cheering spectators. Teams were allowed no more than two national players.
In the final, Rav4 four defeated Maxfield Park who claimed a cash prize of $100,000 for finishing second; Navar placed third and won $50,000 for their efforts.
As early as 9 o’clock netballers from Smith’s Chancery Hall Division, in the constituency of St Andrew North Western, and invited teams were busy showing off their skills in what observers hailed as a well-organised event.
“The netball rally is an offspring of the annual Maverley Netball Competition which was started by my father, now retired Member of Parliament Derrick Smith,” Duane, councillor for the Chancery Hall Division of the Kingston & St Andrew Municipal Corporation, told the Jamaica Observer.
“Derrick Smith ran that competition for over 20 years and when it ended I started one in the Chancery Hall area, which ran for two years before it was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. We have now resumed it and we look forward to having several more years of it every year,” the councillor said.
“Because the community was so interested in it, I decided to move it to Sherlock Crescent MultiPurpose Court which Derrick had built before he retired,” Duane Smith added.
All registered teams got meals for players and coaching staff courtesy of K and F Caterers which is operated by Karlene Smith, Duane’s mother.
“We had some lovely sponsors that made the day a great one,” Duane Smith continued. “Refreshments – juices and water – were provided by GraceKennedy; and among the others were Best Dressed Foods, Medical Disposables and Supplies, Ian K Levy, Cals Manufacturing, Cari-Med Group of Companies, iPrint Digital Group of Companies, and Wok You Want Ltd.”
