INSPORTS netball, football finalists to be decided
The Institute of Sports’ All-Island Primary Schools’ Football and Netball competitions are down to the last four following quarter-final action last week.
The top four teams in the football competition are Corinaldi Avenue (St James), Holland Primary (St Elizabeth), Pembroke Hall (St Andrew) and Bridgeport Primary (St Catherine), while the top four in netball are Corinaldi Avenue (St James), Bethabara Primary (Manchester), St Patrick’s (Kingston) and White Horses (St Thomas).
Over 200 schools started the competitions in November 2022, with Bethabara Primary the defending netball champions, and Naggo Head the football title holders.
The football semi-finals will kick off on Wednesday, with Corinaldi Avenue taking on Holland Primary at St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) and Pembroke Hall tackling Bridgeport Primary at Stadium East. Both games are scheduled for 11:30 am.
The netball semi-finals on Thursday will pit Bethabara against Corinaldi Avenue at STETHS and St Patrick’s Primary against White Horses at the Stadium Courts. Both games are scheduled for 10:00 am.
In the netball quarter-finals last week, St James’ Corinaldi Primary defeated Clark’s Town Primary 9-6; Bethabara turned back Mandeville Primary 11-7; St Patrick’s Primary swamped Old Harbour 19-8; and White Horses defeated Oracabessa Primary 8-4.
In football action, Pembroke Hall edged Old Harbour 7-6; Holland Primary clipped Santa Cruz Primary 1-0; Corinaldi Avenue defeated Irwin Primary 3-2; and Bridgeport Primary defeated Annotto Bay Primary 2-0 on penalties, after the teams played to a 1-1 stalemate in normal and extra time.
Prize money totalling $900,000 are up for grabs, with the winners set to walk away with $200,000, and the runners-up $125,000. The third-placed teams will collect $75,000, while $50,000 will go to the fourth-placed teams. In addition, the winning coaches will receive gift vouchers for $10,000 each.
The finals and third-place play-offs are set for Friday, March 17.
There are also plans to stage all-star games for football and netball at a date to be announced.
