Burrowes, Munn-Barrow defend Caymanas Golf Classic titles
Justin Burrowes and Jodi Munn-Barrow successfully defended their Caymanas Golf Classic titles over the weekend at the Caymanas Golf Course in St Catherine.
Burrowes played 54 holes in a specially approved format over the two days (27 holes each day), while Munn-Barrow played 36 holes over the same period.
Burrowes posted scores of three under par 69 for the first round and par 36 for the first nine holes of the second round to complete 27 holes on the first day. On day two, he scored one under par 35 to complete the second round at one under par 71.
The eight golfers in the Men and Men Senior 0-6 World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) category took a half-hour break before teeing off for the final round of 18 holes. Burrowes then scored par 72 for an overall three-round score of four under par 212, and a commanding win of 18 shots ahead of runner-up William Knibbs.
Burrowes carded 11 birdies, and an eagle on the first hole of the third round, but it also included nine bogeys of which two came on the final two holes of the tournament.
“It was certainly a test of fitness. It was long. It was very long. It was very hot, very windy. The course was playing very difficult because it was so firm. I tried to play every shot to the best of my ability and it worked out in the end,” said Burrowes.
He endorsed the format which is designed to help local golfers to gain world ranking points as more WAGR tournaments are played locally.
Knibbs’ three-round scores were five over par 79, 79 and par 72 for a combined score of 14 over par 230. He was two shots ahead of Sean Morris who scored eight over par 80, three over par 75 and five over par 77 for a total score of 16 over par 232. Zandre Roye 239 (78, 83, 78) and Wayne Chai Chong, former JGA president, 240 (77, 81, 82) round out the top five.
The other golfers in the tournament played the conventional 18 holes in two days.
Jamaica’s best female golfer on the island and current JGA President Munn-Barrow captured the Ladies -0-6 section with two good rounds of 76 and 74 for a total of six over par 150.
Diane Hudson 180 (92, 88) took the Ladies 13 and over category ahead of Susan White 203 (100, 103).
