Hunt for beauty
Miss Universe JA North Eastern selections on March 4
OCHO RIOS, St Ann — Hopeful the next Miss Universe Jamaica will be from their section of the country, organisers of the Miss Universe Jamaica North Eastern leg of the pageant are on the hunt for someone deemed fit to be crowned their next queen.
“Not only that, we are confident that north east can produce the national winner this year but [will also be] someone who will represent Jamaica with distinction at the international finals,” said committee member and past contestant Kaydian Harty.
Participants will be given an opportunity to make their first impression on judges on March 4 during trials at Mongoose Restaurant and Lounge in Ocho Rios. Among those they will need to impress is the Caribbean’s Next Top Model 2017 Shamique Simms, who will be a guest judge.
The event begins at 11:30 am.
“We are encouraging young ladies who are between the ages of 18 and 27 to turn out for a chance to represent the region in the grand finals later this year. Bring your heels and swimwear,” said Harty.
“Young women are being urged to take advantage of what could turn out to be a life-changing opportunity for them,” she added.
Jamaicans have represented their country with distinction in the Miss Universe Jamaica contest over the years, including 2017 winner Davina Bennett who was featured in a Nordstrom billboard ad in New York this January.
Harty told the Jamaica Observer that she is encouraged by the number of young women who have expressed an interest in participating in this year’s event.
“A lot of women have registered thus far,” she said.
However, she expressed disappointment in the number of sponsors who have so far come on board. Those that are interested, she said, still have time.
“We are still looking for sponsors and are urging the business sector to support the event as there are numerous benefits to be gained from being associated with the Miss Universe brand,” Harty pointed out.
