Williams pleased in spite of ‘ugly’ Portmore win
While admitting that it wasn’t their most attractive performance, Portmore United’s Head Coach Philip Williams expressed delight that his team still obtained the desired outcome as they returned to winning ways in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL).
After enduring a seven-match winless run, Portmore United snapped the streak with a 2-0 win over Vere United in a lacklustre encounter at Jamaica College on Sunday.
A 45+1-minute own-goal by Vere United’s Captain Fitzroy Cummings and Lamar Walker’s 88th-minute strike saw the former champions to the victory, which took them up to 21 points.
However, they remain in eighth position by an inferior goal difference to seventh-placed Waterhouse, who are set to battle second-placed Arnett Gardens (30 points) in the marquee Monday Night fixture.
Vere United, who were suffering their sixth loss of the season, remain 12th on the 14-team standing on 14 points.
“Sometimes you just need to get the job done and that’s what we did,” Williams said in a post-game interview.
“We played games before where we were in total control and we ended up losing or we had to settle for a draw. Today [Sunday] we did what we didn’t do in those previous games, which was to score goals and so I am happy for the three points.”
Portmore United showed more intent from the start and, as such, enjoyed the better passage of play in which they created a few half chances that they should have made count.
Fortunately for them, Vere United offered very little on the attacking front, but did manage to create one meaningful opportunity from which they might have felt robbed of a penalty.
That was in the 36th minute when Javier Brown found space in the 18-yard box for a right-footed effort which was blocked by the hand of former national Captain Rodolph Austin. However, Vere United’s appeal for the 12-yard kick was ignored by referee Doyen Tummings.
At the other end, Portmore eventually broke the deadlock on the stroke of the break when Emelio Rousseau’s weighted corner kick was deflected in by Cummings, much to the disappointment of his goalkeeper Rojay Williams.
The second half offered nothing to write home about, until Alex Marshall’s intended shot found Walker, who easily tucked home from close range, two minutes from time.
Williams, while lauding the contribution of Walker and Marshall, believes both along with young Shakeone Satchwell can cause some real damage if they get going before the business end of the season.
“If all of them get into their game, I don’t think there is any other combination in the league that will be more potent as them. It is just a matter of them finding their footing as we go forward,” Williams said.
His counterpart Linval Dixon rued his team’s lack of quality and concentration in possession.
“It was a disappointing performance, I think we turned over the ball too much and it’s something that we have to address and keep working on,” he said.
“The same thing happened in our previous game, but as I said, we will continue working on it as well as our concentration level to better improve our performances as we go along.”
