Vows: The Gift of Love
You’ve asked and we’ve answered! Welcome to your weekly column ‘Planning Your Happily Ever After’ with wedding consultant Shikima Hinds.
It’s become customary for brides and grooms to exchange gifts, vows and rings when they get married. Though it is considered an “optional tradition”, the sentimental gift exchange between couples on their wedding day is becoming increasingly popular.
The exchange of gifts is a special way of expressing mutual love, so do take care in the selection process.
Meaningful exchanges might, for example, be a necklace with two intertwined circles, signifying commitment to each other. Or perhaps an heirloom from either family that symbolises the joining together of two families. If the relationship is rooted in shared interests or hobbies, the gift could reflect same.
When to exchange gifts
Some couples exchange gifts the night before the wedding or the morning of the wedding, while others exchange gifts post-ceremony. The most popular time to gift exchange is prior to the ceremony and as the couple prepare for the first look photo sessions. Delegate a member of the bridal party to deliver gifts to the respective ‘prep’ rooms. Have a photographer on standby to capture the reactions.
Gift ideas
The type of gift you give is open to your own interpretation. Some couples like to exchange gifts that can be worn on the wedding day, such as a necklace for the bride and/or cufflinks/watch for the bridegroom.
Other common sentimental ideas for the bride and groom gift exchange include:
• Honeymoon essentials, such as luggage, passport covers and even sunglasses
• A framed photo or canvas piece from an important moment in your relationship
• A treasured book of poetry or memories that have meaning for you both
• An object or souvenir from a special moment or experience early in your relationship
• A special wine, whiskey, or Champagne with glasses to complement the gift
• A personalised item that reflects their lifestyle or hobby.
Once you have your gift, always include a card. Attach a handwritten note sharing something meaningful about your love, commitment, and relationship together.
The gift of love and the memories that accompany them will always be cherished.
