Cameron’s delight
Stats don’t lie.
Tiffany Cameron has been in superb form for Hungarian top-flight club ETO FC Gyor, but what she really wants is to replicate that form in Jamaica’s senior Reggae Girlz setup, especially with a spot on the final squad to the FIFA Women’s World Cup on the line.
However, with Head Coach Lorne Donaldson and his assistants Ak Lakhani and Xavier Gilbert more focused on assessing the country’s young talent, the opportunity for Cameron to impress has been far and few between.
But as fate would have it, the absence of Khadija “Bunny” Shaw due to personal reasons, as well as Siobhan Wilson and Shania Hayles, both out with injuries, opened the window for Cameron to join the Cup of Nations squad in Australia, and she is relishing the occasion.
It provides the Canadian-born striker, who has tallied 11 goals and nine assists in 12 appearances for Gyor, an opportunity to prove her worth as one of the country’s elite players and she is ready and raring to repay the coaches confidence in her.
Cameron came on as a 74th-minute substitue, as the 44th-ranked Girlz opened the tournament with a 0-3 loss to seventh-ranked Spain at the Central Coast Stadium in Grosford, Australia on Thursday.
They will square off against 28th-ranked Czech Republic on February 18, and close against 12th-ranked hosts Australia on February 22.
“It’s an exciting opportunity and it’s always an honour to represent Jamaica whether it’s in a friendly game or for a major tournament. At this time, staying present is priority. I don’t know what the future holds, but I know God sent me here for a reason. I just need a chance to show and prove myself on the field,” Cameron told the Jamaica Observer.
“I can’t explain this feeling I have deep within, but this time being in camp feels very different for me. The past month I’ve played four friendly games with my club locking in 340 minutes, scoring two goals and two assists, so my game fitness is up to par again and I’m ready to prove myself when given the opportunity,” she added.
Those games Cameron referred to are the three international friendly games and one domestic friendly game her club played leading up to this camp Down Under. One of the international games was against her Girlz teammate Sydney Schneider and her new club Sparta Prague in Czech Republic.
Cameron got on the score sheet in that 1-1 stalemate, but more importantly, paraded her versatility playing as a striker, winger and also as a wing back throughout pre-season preparations.
That, the 31-year-old believes, is an indication that she is well prepared for whatever role given to her by Donaldson, as she still has much to offer to the programme.
“The coaches can always count on me for my work rate and ability to create goal scoring opportunities for myself and my teammates whenever I’m on the field. In previous experiences playing for Jamaica, I’ve proven that I’m capable of being an offensive threat no matter what opponent we face,” Cameron said.
“I think this tournament is very important for the team and our coaching staff to see how players respond competing against top-tier countries. I’m anticipating that those who flourish under pressure will put themselves in a better position to make the World Cup roster. So my goal is to be one of those players,” she declared.
While her goal output and physical traits makes her well suited as a forward, Cameron, whose timing and vision in the box are perhaps her most outstanding assets, reiterated that hers is a free-spirited approach for the remainder of this tournament, as all three opponents are expected to serve up a different challenge.
“I’m going to commit to playing free and embracing this opportunity. When I go with what feels natural, I play my best football and I enjoy the game. As a team, we expect all three games to be very challenging and will have to give our best and remain mentally focused,” she ended.
