Grange Hill High gets musical instruments, sports gear
GRANGE HILL, Westmoreland — Students at Grange Hill High School in Westmoreland are now able to sing a different tune after they were gifted with musical instruments and sports gear under the Ministry of National Security’s ‘Liv Gud’ music, sports and technology (MST) initiative.
The items were presented by Minister of National Security Dr Horace Chang on February 9. Among the gifts were a trumpet, drum, footballs and netball bibs.
Speaking during the event Dr Chang said instruments are a meaningful part of the country’s culture and spoke of the role they could play in shaping youngsters’ lives.
“We have to find a way to redirect them. No child is born violent — no Jamaican male. It’s not a part of our culture,” he stressed.
“Our culture is more reflective in what we’re doing in presenting you with music instruments and sports equipment. Jamaica is known globally as a sporting giant; we have the world-beaters,” he added.
Chairman of the school’s board, Samuel Williams was overjoyed that the institution was selected to receive the gifts.
“We are happy that you have chosen this institution and we want to thank you for coming and highlighting this institution where it is surrounded by communities in the violent zone,” he said gratefully.
Member of Parliament for Westmorland Western Morland Wilson, who was present at the ceremony, encouraged students and staff to use the instruments to the best of their abilities.
“Music is something that we can use to build communities, build your personalities, and it can bring you to many high places,” he assured the students. “The music teacher and the students: I’d want you to use these instruments to the best of your abilities.”
‘Liv Gud’ is a Ministry of National Security-spearheaded national anti-violence campaign that aims to promote the value of respect for others, the sanctity of life, law and public order.
The initiative includes extensive community engagement programmes geared towards disrupting criminal activity, and restoring public order and public safety, while encouraging social responsibility among each and every Jamaican citizen.
