Under-17 Reggae Boyz fall to Guadeloupe

Under-17 Reggae Boyz fall to Guadeloupe

Jamaica’s young Reggae Boyz failed to make it two-in-two at the Concacaf Under-17 Men’s Championships as they went down 1-2 to Guadeloupe in their Group G encounter at the Doroteo Guamuch Flores Stadium in Guatemala City, Guatemala, on Tuesday.

The Boyz, who defeated Cuba 4-2 in their opening contest on Sunday, went in search of a fourth win in four meetings at this level against Guadeloupe, and more importantly, to make safe their spot in the next round.

However, after taking the lead in the 41st minute through Ronaldo Barrett’s sweetly struck left-footer from a distance that gave Guadeloupe’s Wilhem Perran no chance at a save, a lapse in concentration, coupled with Nashan Bolt’s ejection, proved their undoing. Bolt, who was cautioned in the 39th, picked up a second yellow in the 52nd minute.

This, as Willian Jacques (78th) and Ylan Moloza (89th) found the net for Guadeloupe, who assumed second position on three points, same as Jamaica but with a slightly better goal difference.

Costa Rica, who were scheduled to meet the pointless Cubans in the late kick-off, head the standings.

Despite the loss, the Jamaicans remain in contention for one of three spots from the group to the round of 16.

They are scheduled to play Costa Rica on Sunday, with victory likely to put them in a position for a better draw against a perceived lesser opponent in the knockout round as they seek a spot in the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Peru this November.
